Let’s face it- flies can be super annoying when they want to be. Especially when they are hovering and buzzing around you, choosing you as their landing spot, and distracting you constantly.
These pesky little creatures also spread germs and bacteria where they go. For many such reasons, you might be looking for a solution to keep flies away.
There are a number of fly-repellants in the market, but chemicals are not the safest solutions considering you’re inhaling them too.
A natural and cost-effective alternative is to use essential oils. Yes, you can use a number of essential oils to get rid of flies.
Essential Oils To Get Rid of Flies.
Over the years we have tested lots of different essential oils, some have been brilliant and others were a complete waste of time and money.
Below you will find 5 proven essential oils to get rid of flies and as a bonus, they all smell lovely too.
Lavender.
Readily available in many forms, lavender is not only used in aromatherapy. Derived from the lavender (genus Lavandula) plant, its’ essential oil is not just a sweet-smelling oil for relaxation or for skin and hair. It is extremely versatile and one of the best fly-repellants. This is because flies hate lavender and repulsed by it.
Simply use lavender oil as a spray around the house, or place some oil in a bowl.
But don’t buy a really cheap one as the smell is weak and doesn’t last.
I have tested many Lavender essential oils over the years and have finally settled on this one which is over on Amazon and it is reasonably priced too.
Cedwarwood.
Cedar oil is another great solution and a natural repellant for flies. It even helps to keep other insects like mosquitos, silverfish, ants, lice, ticks and mites away.
How does it work? Well, cedarwood oil can dehydrate these creepy crawlies quickly. They can’t deal well with the loss of moisture, and cedar oil dries them out and kills them. It also contains pheromones that affect their navigation and disorients them.
Put a few drops of cedarwood essential oil in a vaporizer for a continued mist around or you can spray it after diluting it in some water.
Lemongrass.
Lemongrass oil (Cymbopogon citratus) is another worthy mention when it comes to natural fly repellants.
It has a fresh aroma with lemony and citrusy hints. Not only does it smell refreshing, but it also has properties that make it an effective solution for flies and mosquitoes.
You can use lavender oil on cotton balls or a sponge and then place in a jar or can. Because of its’ lovely smell, it even works as a scent at outdoor parties while keeping flies away from food.
Peppermint.
Did you know that peppermint is also a great, natural fly deterrent? It has widely been used as a natural herb, in food, drinks, and even medicines.
The smell of menthol seems pleasant to most of us, but insects especially flies absolutely detest it. You can use peppermint oil in any way you want-spray it, add a few drops on a burning candle, or soak some cotton balls in oil and place them around the house.
Rosemary.
Rosemary is a very popular herb, especially when used in culinary and most of us have it in the kitchen. The good news is, this herb is another effective solution to keep flies away. You can use its’ essential oil on your skin directly to protect yourself.
Or you can use it in any method you wish and it will help you ward off flies as well as mosquitoes.
